Designer Booklet
The Designer Booklet project aimed to explore the works and impact of an influential graphic designer through the creation of an 8-page booklet. The assignment required the integration of two published articles of copy, a showcase of notable works, and proper citation of all sourced images and copy.
I chose to spotlight Massimo Vignelli, a prominent figure in modernist design. Vignelli is renowned for his contributions to graphic design, particularly signage systems. His iconic projects include the New York subway signage and the U.S. National Parks system pamphlets.
Vignelli's celebrated works inspired the design theme of the booklet. The layout features design elements that reflect both his subway signage and the National Park pamphlets. Notable design choices include:
Aspect Ratio: The booklet's size and proportions echo the format of the National Parks pamphlets.
Typography and Page Numbers: The use of distinctive typography and page numbers pays tribute to the Helvetica typeface, which is significantly associated with Vignelli’s subway designs.
Color Scheme: A black text bar across the pages mirrors the styling of the National Park pamphlets, creating a cohesive visual identity throughout the booklet.
Tools Utilized:
The booklet was assembled using Adobe InDesign, allowing for precise layout formatting and typography design. Additionally, images were processed and prepared for print using Adobe Photoshop, ensuring high-quality visuals.
The completed booklet effectively encapsulates the essence of Massimo Vignelli’s design philosophy while serving as an informative piece that honors his legacy within the field of graphic design.
